Things to do in Malawi

The Warm Heart of Africa

A lion’s roar. A flash of cichlids. Malawi is for travellers who collect moments, not things.

This small country is home to an astonishing range of ecosystems.

In just a day’s travel you could move from golden savannah grasses to dense woodland, from soaring mountain plateaus to white sandy beaches.

Malawi is unique in its geographically compact diversity, this means that within a two week trip, you can find yourself being part of community projects and village life, to mountain trekking, tropical snorkelling and a BIG FIVE safari. Few other places can offer such a rich diversity in a short space of time.

Nyasa (Lake Malawi)

From Fisherman’s Rest, the “Lake of Stars” is within a 5 hour drive. Lake Malawi shimmers under wide blue skies, the waters are alive with colourful cichlids – found nowhere else on earth. Golden beaches, island hideaways and lively fishing villages offer a rhythm of life that’s gentle, vibrant, and unique to this vast in-shore body of water.

Majete Wildlife Reserve

Majete Wildlife Reserve is just a short 45 minute journey away from Fisherman’s Rest. Once almost empty, it now thrives with elephants, lions, rhinos and more — a true conservation success story. Game drives and river viewpoints bring you close to Malawi’s wild heart, where every visit feels both rare, wild and unforgettable.

Mulanje Massif, Blantyre and Tea Estates

Less than two hours from Fisherman’s Rest, Mulanje Mountain rises on the horizon — vast, rugged, and steeped in legend. Its granite peaks, forested slopes and tumbling waterfalls invite both hikers and dreamers. Locally known as the Island in the Sky,  Mulanje offers trails for every pace, each with views that take your breath away. It’s unlike any other place you’ll ever visit.

Tea Estates and Blantyre City

Beyond Blantyre City, you’ll find rolling tea estates, where lush emerald rows stretch to the horizon. Satemwa is a favourite — stroll through the plantations, sip fresh brews, and soak up views across the valley. Back in Blantyre, discover Malawi’s bustling city life, where history, markets, cafés and culture meet the hum of the modern day.

Travelling to and around Malawi

If you’re looking for *almost* guaranteed wildlife and a lot of heat and sunshine, then travelling to Malawi between September-November is your perfect time of year. If you struggle with temperatures higher than 30 degrees centigrade, then visit Malawi when it’s lush, green and temperate around March-May.

From start to finish, we host your trip   — our vehicles take you on every adventure, and our close partners welcome you at each destination. Malawi really is one of the few places in Africa where you can experience so much variety in a short space of time.
