How to Find Us

If you’re arranging your own travel to Fisherman’s Rest, or you’re a day visitor from Blantyre and need a little more advice on how to get to Mbame Estate, please select an option for more detailed instructions.

Arriving from the North (Blantyre).

Leave Blantyre via the M1 Southbound. Stay on the M1 for 20km, you’ll pass through Mpemba and Chadzunda before arriving at Mirale Police Check. This is a routine check for goods passing up and down the escarpment. If asked, let the police know you are staying at Fisherman’s Rest Lodge. Fisherman’s Rest Lodge and Nature Reserve is clearly signposted on the right-hand side of the road, 1km after the Police barrier.

Arriving from the South (Marka)

When arriving from the South, take the M1 northbound at the Marka Border Post. Follow the M1 for 181km. In the foothills of the escarpment, you’ll arrive at Tabwa Police Check. If asked, let the Police know you are staying at Fisherman’s Rest Lodge. Enjoy the winding climb up the valley, with its spectacular views. Once you pass through Mwamunamodzi trading post, you’ll see Tilitonse Community Centre on your right. Keep going up the road, on the left-hand side, you will see the clearly signposted entrance to Fisherman’s Rest Lodge and Nature Reserve.

You can fly into either Lilongwe (KIA) or Blantyre (CIA) via Malawian Airlines, Air Ethiopia or Air Kenya. Lilongwe is a 4 to 5-hour journey to Fisherman’s Rest. You can either hire a car at Kamuzu International Airport or catch a coach to Blantyre from Lilongwe.

If flying into Blantyre, Chileka Airport, please arrange an airport transfer with us. If not, then taxis are available outside Chileka airport. Please instruct them to take you to “Fisherman’s Rest Mirale, past Chadzunda, on the M1 South”.

If you’re all about slow travel and adventure, there are local minibuses that will take you from outside the airport into Blantyre Minibus Stage. In Blantyre, you will need to take a minibus to HHI, then catch a connection to Chadzunda. From Chadzunda, you will need to either wait for another minibus to take you past the entrance to Fisherman’s Rest or catch a motorbike taxi. The best way to travel on local transport is to ask! Malawi is a very friendly and helpful nation.
