What you’ll find is people. Community. Eye contact. Conversations that make you pause and think.
And a sense of peace so full you’ll wonder how you lived without it.
Fisherman’s Rest didn’t begin as a tourism venture, but as a deeply personal commitment of one family to place, to people, to the rhythms of rural Malawi. Here, you are a part of our long-term commitment to Malawi and to sustainable travel that truly is a force for good.
Wik, Sue, the founders, didn’t arrive in Malawi to build a travel experience.
They came in 1990, answering a God-given call to live with purpose — a call that grew into a life of hospitality and generosity on many different levels.
What began with small community projects and opening their doors to weary travellers and missionary groups has since turned into something bigger…
A place for people who crave true connection.
We opened our doors to families seeking a different kind of richness for their children, and to adventurers and groups eager to connect across continents and cultures.
Fisherman’s Rest soon became known as a place for immersive, hands-on experience of Malawi — a place where guests didn’t just visit, they became part of the story.
For over 20 years, the lodge has been woven into the fabric of the community.
We’ve shared countless cups of maize porridge, prayed and worshipped God together (and swapped chickens with our neighbours).
We’ll introduce you to people we’ve known a lifetime – the stories and laughter you share with them often become the highlight of your trip (alongside the lions at Majete!).
At Fisherman’s Rest, we guarantee travel that honours both people and place. When you experience our projects, you’re never just an observer — you’ll step into the rhythm of daily life, something real, built on years of mutual respect with local communities. We believe in travel that goes far beyond an itinerary. What you do and feel here become part of you, long after you leave.
Our mission is to open minds and hearts — guiding thoughtful families and impact-driven travellers into real connection. At Fisherman’s Rest Lodge, you step into life in a new culture, contribute to community-led work, and become part of something remarkable that is rooted in faith and lives on well beyond your visit.
Nothing in life happens by accident or overnight. We moved to Malawi full of dreams, with no idea what was ahead. We stayed because we quickly realised that effective, lasting change takes time — decades in fact. That’s exactly why we made Malawi our home..
For us, true impact begins with service. Serving communities, schools and families in rural Malawi through projects that open a way out of poverty.
But it goes deeper — there is sustainable, emotional, heart-shifting, and often spiritual change. This is felt by those who visit and build real relationships with our team, our communities, and the work itself.
If that’s you, we’ve set a place at our table and we can’t wait to welcome you to Malawi.
We have too many to list… but here are some of the incredible people who make everything run smoothly at Fisherman’s Rest.
